Vivatone® Receives Patent for Open Fit RITE Hearing Aid

Posted On: September 2, 2008

PR Newswire-Vivatone® Hearing Systems received a U.S. patent Sept. 2 on its open-ear hearing device.

Hearing aids traditionally have been bulky devices that plugged up the ear canal, causing a person's voice to sound like they are in a barrel when speaking. Vivatone® in April 2004 introduced its open-ear hearing aid. Its small microphone and digital sound processor fit comfortably behind the ear and connect to the miniature speaker in the center of the owner's ear canal.

Because the Vivatone® hearing aid leaves the ear canal open, natural sound continues to flow into the ear around the speaker. In addition to the hearing enhancement provided by the digital sound processor, the wearer enjoys the natural sound of their residual hearing. The tiny device is cosmetically appealing and on most people almost invisible.

The growth potential in the hearing aid market is significant. Ten percent of the population of the industrialized world suffers from some form of impairment that can be helped by hearing aids. Despite the potential benefit, 80 percent of these potential users do not wear hearing aids. Even with only 20 percent penetration in the United States, annual hearing aid sales are in the billions.

Vivatone® markets a full line of speaker-in-the-ear, open-ear products for sale in the U.S. and throughout the world. In addition to its newly-issued U.S. patent, the company has patent protection in Japan and has been notified that a European patent will issue shortly.

Oticon Pediatrics Adds New Products, Features and Services to National Loaner Bank Program

Posted On: August 29, 2008

Oticon Pediatrics, to better assist hearing care professionals in providing optimum care for infants and toddlers newly identified with hearing loss, has instituted a series of new products, features and services to its National Loaner Bank Program.

The enhancements are designed to make it easier for both practitioners and patients to take full advantage of this innovation hearing solution loaning service. The Loaner Bank provides hearing instruments for a three-month period to children under the age of three years while arrangements for third-party reimbursement are secured or while cochlear implant evaluation is under way.

The new additions include:

·  Amigo FM transmitters T10 and T20 and Amigo receivers R2, R7 and the R12 models

·  Pediatric-friendly Vigo Pro and Vigo

·  Earmolds at no charge, provided by Ototech

·  Loss and damage coverage at no charge for the duration of the loaner period

"The program enhancements were a direct response to feedback from our professional partners," explained Sheena Oliver, AuD, MBA, manager, Oticon Pediatrics. "As more and more practitioners fit FM systems on infants and toddlers, there is an increasing demand for FM in our loaner bank program."

Oliver noted positive response to the pediatric-friendly Vigo Pro and Vigo devices and the complementary R12 FM receiver made them a logical and much-requested addition to the products offered through the loaner program.

"We also found that, although we were providing hearing aids, obtaining earmolds to couple the hearing aids was stumbling block for many families since earmolds are generally approved when the hearing aids are approved," Oliver said. "Thanks to a cooperative effort with Ototech, we can now serve many families who would not otherwise have been able to take advantage of the loaner bank."

Making the program available to more families was also the goal behind Oticon Pediatrics' decision to eliminate the $50 hearing aid protection fee that provides protection against loss or damage.

The National Loaner Bank Program offers a range of Oticon hearing instruments, each available in beige, light brown and dark brown colors. All hearing aids are shipped with tamper-resistant battery doors. To assist with retention and prevent against loss, a sky blue EarGear hearing aid retention device will be provided with each loaner hearing instrument order.

To utilize the Loaner Bank, hearing care professionals must have an Oticon account and complete a one-time application to participate in the program. Upon acceptance, practitioners must verify that they have completed training on Oticon fitting software and the available loaner hearing instruments. Hearing care professionals must also submit a request form for each child requesting hearing aids. There is no fee to participate in this national program.

For more information about the Oticon Pediatrics Loaner Bank Program, contact Maureen Doty-Tomasula, marketing manager, at 1-888-OTI-PED1 (1-888-684-7331 or mdd@oticonusa.com.

Oticon-Sponsored Habitat for Humanity Home Dedicated

Posted On: August 28, 2008

Oticon Inc. representatives and officials from Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte welcomed Carla Harlee and sons Brennen, 10, and Eric, 8, and twin daughters Kayana and Dayana, 14, to their new Habitat for Humanity home in July. Oticon, a leading hearing device manufacturer, donated $60,000 to sponsor the single-family dwelling as part of its Building Sound Foundations™ program in celebration of the American Academy of Audiology's 20th anniversary.

Oticon President Peer Lauritsen joined with Bert Green, executive director of Habitat Charlotte, and American Academy of Audiology Executive Director Cheryl Kreider Carey, CAE, to present the keys to the new homeowner. The 1,230-square-foot, four-bedroom residence on West Todd Lane in Charlotte is the 68th home constructed by Habitat for Humanity Charlotte this year.

"Providing solutions that enable people to live their lives to the fullest potential is the goal of everything we do at Oticon, Inc.," Lauritsen said. "Building a home is a bit different than building a hearing device but the desired outcome is the same-to change people's lives for the better. We are proud to have had the opportunity to work with Habitat for Humanity Charlotte and our valued partners at the American Academy of Audiology to help make the Harlee Family's dream of a home of their own a reality."

Carey noted the unique humanitarian effort reflects the importance of the relationship between the hearing care industry and association members in achieving goals that benefit people with hearing loss. "We are honored that Oticon has chosen this very public effort to celebrate the American Academy of Audiology's first 20 years of advancing the profession of audiology through leadership, advocacy, education, public awareness, and support of research. It is a wonderful way to demonstrate to the general public the caring and commitment to improving life that are at the core of our profession," she added.

The new home is truly a labor of love-for volunteers, sponsor and family members. One of the unique features of the Habitat Charlotte program is the commitment by homeowners that they will apply "sweat equity" to the construction of their houses.

"We enjoyed helping other Habitat homeowners build their homes, but building our own home was so special to us. We truly bless and praise this program and all who support it," Carla Harlee said.

As part of the celebration, the family received a handmade quilt by North Carolina artist Kay Young, a framed family portrait from Oticon, and the volunteer signature book from the building site along with traditional Habitat for Humanity gifts: a tool kit, a homeowner's manual and a Bible.

Cochlear Reaches Implant Activation Milestone

Posted On: August 28, 2008

Newswise-Cochlear, the world's leader in advanced hearing technologies, will reach a landmark milestone Aug. 12 when 72-year-old, New York resident, Susan Grossman becomes the 120,000th individual to have a bilateral Nucleus® Freedom cochlear implant (a small electronic device that can provide a sense of sound to someone who is deaf) activated.

Grossman began to lose hearing in her right ear in her 30s, and her hearing loss steadily grew worse over time, eventually leaving her almost deaf on both ears.

She will visit the NYU Cochlear Implant Center to activate both her Nucleus® Freedom cochlear implants, where she is expected to hear again. A palm-sized speech processor in the implant can pick up sounds and convert them into an electronic code that the surgically implanted receiver will use to pass sound information to the patient's brain.

Vivosonic releases Integrity™ Version 4.5

Posted On: August 27, 2008

Vivosonic Inc., the Toronto-based developer and manufacturer of the world's only Auditory Evoked Response system enabling non-sedated Auditory brainstem response (ABR), announces the release of its Integrity™ Version 4.5.

The Integrity system reduces the effects of physiological artifacts, enabling clinicians to test non-sedated, even active patients, making it an essential clinical tool for testing physically and mentally challenged adults, patients with autism, cerebral palsy, sleep apnea, Alzheimer's and Parkinson diseases, and pacemakers. Protection against electromagnetic interferences enables clear results in places like the NICU, SCBU and operating room.

"This latest version of the Integrity system is a new milestone in elevating the level of hearing healthcare. It helps clinicians provide care to kids with no risks and costs associated with sedation and general anesthesia-in private clinics, hospitals, schools, and research centers," President and CEO Dr. Yuri Sokolov said. "The new techniques we implemented in Version 4.5 further the unique clinical benefits of Integrity." Its new, patent-pending technique improves confidence in ABR waveform repeatability and response presence, reduced noise and stimulus artifacts, and also introduces state-of-the-art printing functionality setting a new standard for reporting.

With Version 4.5, Integrity customers will continue to be able to test patients who cannot be tested with conventional ABR systems without sedation or anesthesia and in environments where achieving clear results was almost impossible.

ABR is a very faint electrical potential evoked from the auditory nerve and brainstem by the presentation of a sound such as a click or tone burst. ABR audiometry is a test to detect a hearing loss, especially in newborns, as well as to assess the functions of the ears, auditory nerve, and various brain functions. ABR is also used to estimate hearing thresholds for further intervention such as hearing aid fitting or considering a cochlear implant.

ABR audiometry is a safe and painless test but, due to muscle artifacts that interfere with the ABR, conventional ABR equipment often requires sedation or general anesthesia in children 3 months to 4 to 6 years of age.

Sonic Innovations Teams with Hearing Clinics to Provide Free Screenings

Posted On: August 26, 2008

Sonic Innovations Inc. teamed up with audiologists and hearing aid clinics across the country to provide free hearing screenings in May in conjunction with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's "Better Hearing and Speech Month."

The screenings were coordinated in more than 40 clinics in 10 states.

"The National Council on Aging estimates that more than 9 million Americans over the age of 65 have some type of hearing loss. Yet, as reported by the Better Hearing Institute, there are also more than 6 million people in this country between the ages of 18 and 44 with hearing loss, and nearly 1.5 million are school age. So, it's more important than ever that people have their hearing tested. We're seeing younger people losing their hearing as a result of personal audio technology products that are too loud and used too often," Sonic Innovations CEO Sam Westover said.

In the past, many people were reluctant to use hearing aids because of their size and appearance. Yet, with technology breakthroughs involving digital sound processing and the miniaturization of hearing aids, many of the new devices are virtually undetectable.

Posted On: August 25, 2008

Sonic Innovations Inc. launched a new program in cooperation with the Armed Forces Foundation. For each Sonic Innovations' Velocity hearing aid purchased, the company will donate up to $50 to the Armed Forces Foundation through Oct. 1.

"As a U.S.-based company, Sonic Innovations is strongly committed to acknowledging the sacrifices our military personnel have made throughout the years," Sonic Innovations CEO Sam Westover said. "The Department of Veterans Affairs has stated that hearing damage is the number one disability in the war on terror. We know about the devastating impact hearing loss has on people, and we wanted to find a way to give back to these brave men and women. So we decided to establish a fund to support our troops through the sales of our hearing aids. Whether they need help with a hearing loss, educational expenses or emergency funds, Sonic Innovations hopes that our fund will make a difference in helping many service men and women improve their quality of life."

Velocity hearing aids represent Sonic Innovations' premium line of digital products with hands-free, universal features that allow smooth transitions as the environment changes, adaptive directionality, adaptive feedback cancellation and auto-telephone.

The Armed Forces Foundation is a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization established in 2001 to promote the morale, welfare and quality of life of the U.S. Armed Forces community, including active duty personnel, national guardsmen, reservists and retired personnel and their families. Specifically, the foundation provides direct financial support to service members and their families for everyday living expenses, housing improvements, transition and career counseling, funeral arrangements, counseling and family retreats. The foundation also pays for airline tickets and hotel bills so families can visit relatives in the armed services who have been hospitalized.

"Sonic Innovations is delighted to be able to play a role in providing much-needed donations to such a worthy and important organization as the Armed Forces Foundation," Westover said. "We worked through the Department of Defense and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in identifying a group to work with, and they both recommended this foundation as first on their lists. We also discovered in our initial discussions that 96 percent of all donations received are given back to military families. With that incredible return rate, we hope our donation will truly have an impact on many people."

Dr. Murray Grossan Develops EarAid™ for Healthy Hearing

Posted On: August 21, 2008

Presbycusis is a type of hearing loss that accompanies aging and is common to more than half of the population over 55. That means that half the baby boomer generation may be experiencing some form of hearing loss.

According to Dr. Yuri Agrawal of the Johns Hopkins University, "Indeed there is concern that we may be facing an epidemic of hearing impairment." But now there is help available for this growing problem. With more than 30 years of success in treating tinnitus and hearing loss, ENT Specialist, Dr. Murray Grossan, has developed a specially formulated capsule: EarAid™, a cutting-edge anti-oxidant for hearing health. EarAid™ combines 16 elements that work in combination to help the ear, nerve and the brain to slow or stop hearing loss.

And what is that ringing or buzzing in your ear that only you can hear? It could be tinnitus, or ringing in the ear, a disconcerting condition that often occurs with age-related hearing loss. According to Grossan, "Until now treatment for presbycusis and tinnitus has been ineffective, because all therapies dealt solely with the ear. We now know that these problems come from the combination of the brain, the nerve and the inner ear." Responding to this new discovery, Grossan created the EarAid™ formula, which provides an optimum dosage and balanced combination of ingredients that are safely and effectively delivered to the ear, nerve and brain with real results. "Before they used a single product; now we know it takes a synergistic combination to be effective," Grossan said.

Recent medical research by the U.S. and Israeli armed forces discovered that when free radicals, known for damaging the hearing system, are removed from the body by introducing specially formulated antioxidants together with biological nutrients, the degenerative process can be reversed. Building upon this new research along with data obtained from PET Scans, MRI and Digital Imaging, Grossan developed EarAid,™ which combines its proprietary antioxidants and nutrients together in a unique, synergistic formula to improve ear function as well as lessen ringing in the ears by directly nourishing the ear, nerves and brain.

EarAid™  contains familiar B-complex vitamins and antioxidants. However, it is the unique combination of the 16 ingredients that is responsible for offering such superior results because they work in synergy-performing better in combination with each other than if administered separately. The body responds better to EarAid's Reservatrol when combined with the right proportion of thiamine, and pyridoxine. Compounds exclusive to EarAid™ also improve circulation, delivering the antioxidants right where they're needed. Find the complete list of these ingredients at www.EarAid.info.

Creator of the patented EarAid™ formula, Los Angeles based, board certified ENT specialist, Dr. Murray Grossan, has authored 35 published medical journal articles and other works on tinnitus since 1976. His articles on tinnitus appear on the ADVANCE for Audiology Web site. Dr. Grossan serves on the referral panel of the American Tinnitus Association. He can be contacted at entconsult@aol.com.

Local Hearing-Health Provider Hosts Clinical Trial for New Laser Tinnitus Therapy

Posted On: August 18, 2008

HearingMed Inc., a provider of hearing health services, is hosting an FDA clinical trial exploring the use of laser therapy to moderate or eliminate the symptoms of tinnitus. The trial is sponsored by Erchonia Medical Inc., a provider of low-level medical lasers.

"We are pleased to bring this clinical trial to Sacramento. We feel that this cutting edge technology may offer a real therapeutic alternative to those who suffer from this chronic and often severe condition," said Mark Moore, president of HearingMed Inc. "Our personal experience with Erchonia lasers convinced us to host this double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial."

More than 50 million Americans suffer from some degree of tinnitus1. This often chronic condition is associated with a ringing in the ears or perception of sound where there is none. Causes of this condition are complex and are not well understood.

Since no exact cause for tinnitus is known, treating it is difficult. The trial will explore how low-level laser therapy may moderate or eliminate the symptoms of tinnitus. Phonak and Fleishman-Hillard Win IPRA Gold World Award for Excellence

Posted On: August 18, 2008

Phonak and Fleishman-Hillard were among 28 winners of the Golden World Award for Excellence at the International Public Relations Association summit in London in June, recognized for their Hear the World campaign in the category of "Creativity."

For a year and a half Phonak, the leading maker of hearing systems, has been working with Fleishman-Hillard Munich on an initiative to create awareness and sensitivity in the world towards the topic of hearing and hearing loss. Efforts from traditional media relations, specific creative elements such as "Musician in a Box" and various grassroots activities have effectively supported the awareness campaign.

Those who have poor sight go to the eye doctor and get a pair of glasses that can even be considered as a fashion accessory. However, hearing is one of the biggest taboos of our time, even though more than 10 percent of the population is affected by it. The biggest challenge faced by the awareness campaign: Create Hear the World in a way that it dissolves the taboos surrounding the topic and making it positive without the use of medical terminology or indoctrination.

Phonak and Fleishman-Hillard have created a PR concept reflecting the beautiful side of hearing. Music as the universal language will be the message for hearing worldwide and within all target groups. The campaign includes celebrities such as Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, Amy Winehouse and other popular musicians that are participating in the ambassador program. In addition, several grassroots elements are part of the campaign, such as the "Musician in a Box" that is displayed in pedestrian zones of big cities in an effort to raise awareness of the differences between hearing and hearing loss.

"It was clear to us from the beginning that a conventional PR concept would not be sufficient to raise broad awareness," said Adrian Hunn, sponsoring and public relations for Phonak. "Fleishman-Hillard understood this immediately and developed a comprehensive PR concept that combines both classic and creative elements. With the success of the programs message, numerous grassroot concepts and the 'Musician in a Box,' it was possible, to create an awareness among every age group on the topic of hearing."

Energizer Introduces Zero Mercury Hearing Aid Batteries in U.S.

Posted On: August 15, 2008

Energizer's best performing zero mercury hearing aid batteries to date-tiny batteries the company first debuted in Europe in 2001-will soon be available in the U.S.

In addition to developing a battery that is better for the environment and for U.S. consumers, scientists at Energizer's research and development facility in Westlake, Ohio, have also enhanced product consistency. The new zero mercury product will be widely available throughout the U.S. by October.

"For more than a decade, Energizer has conducted extensive laboratory and field testing to perfect its zero mercury hearing aid batteries," Serge Traylor, Energizer brand manager, said. "We are delighted to be the first to offer this advanced technology to our U.S. consumers."

In 1989, Energizer was the first battery maker to remove mercury from household batteries. With the announcement of its zero mercury hearing aid batteries, Energizer will once again help to move the battery industry forward in a way that is beneficial to both consumers and the environment.

"Energizer has a long history of being at the forefront of developing and implementing technology that is safer for the environment," Traylor said. "While the amount of mercury we removed was small in comparison to other mercury containing products, we are nevertheless pleased to be taking the lead with our hearing aid batteries."

Currently, all zinc air hearing aid batteries sold in the U.S. contain mercury. Through a combination of new product designs, purer raw materials and new manufacturing processes, Energizer's R&D scientists are now able to produce cells with zero mercury.

Hear the World wins the International Sponsoring Award 2007

Posted On: August 12, 2008

Phonak's Hear the World won the International Sponsoring Award 2007 in the innovation category earlier this year. The global initiative promotes awareness for the topic of hearing, educates about the social and emotional implications of hearing loss and informs about available solutions for those with hearing loss.

The awards ceremony was held at the convention of the sponsoring trade union FASPO in Hamburg, Germany. This was the 15th presentation of the award for outstanding and successful sponsoring projects. A high profile jury of experts from economics and science rated concepts from Germany, Austria and Switzerland on their creative implementation, planning and realization. Hear the World was convincing with its innovative approach to sponsoring and the integration of strategically combined elements in a unified whole concept.

Hear the World is an integrated campaign linking elements such as sponsoring, media relations, events, grassroots activities and corporate publishing. Music serves as a universal, all encompassing language, in order to positively transport the topic of hearing.

"A coherent concept against stigmatism due to hearing instruments, with an innovative approach and credible testimonials," was the jury's assessment. "With Hear the World, we are addressing all age groups with the topic of hearing-as hearing affects everyone," said Phonak's Vanessa Erhard Blattmann. "Unfortunately, hearing loss is often only taken seriously when damage has already been done. Hear the World helps to create and promote awareness for the topic of hearing."

Hear the World receives prominent support due to official ambassadors including actress Franka Potente, the German face of the initiative, as well as other international stars such as Plácido Domingo, Common, Joss Stone and Annie Lennox. They have all been photographed by the official Hear the World photographer Bryan Adams in the Hear the World pose.

Hear the World was created to raise awareness about the importance of hearing. The initiative calls attention to the social and emotional impact of hearing loss and addresses prevention of and solutions to a problem that affects more than 10 percent of the world's population.

Nominations Sought for 2008 Oticon Focus on People Awards

Posted On: August 12, 2008

Oticon Inc. is seeking nominations of outstanding individuals with any degree of hearing loss for the 2008 Oticon Focus on People Awards.

The national awards program, created by Oticon in 1996, honors hearing impaired students, adults and advocacy volunteers whose accomplishments demonstrate that hearing loss does not limit a person's ability to make a difference in their families, their communities or the world. By spotlighting people with hearing loss and their achievements and contributions, Oticon aims to change outdated stereotypes that discourage people from seeking professional help for their hearing loss. Now in its 11th year, the program has awarded more than $130,000 to deserving individuals and the not-for-profit causes of their choice.

"We know that people with hearing loss make incredible contributions in all walks of life," Oticon Inc. President Peer Lauritsen said. "But for many, negative stereotypes persist. We believe these hurtful stereotypes influence the more than 80 percent of individuals who hesitate to seek help for their hearing loss. Through this program, Oticon hopes to motivate people to speak with hearing care professionals about the new technologies that can enable them to live the lives they want with the hearing they have."

This year the program offers awards in five categories:

Student, for young people with hearing loss, ages 6 to 21, who are full-time students

Adults, for people with hearing loss, ages 21 and above

Advocacy, for adults with hearing loss, ages 21 and above who actively volunteer their time in advocacy or support efforts for the hearing impaired and deaf community (full-time students in advocacy should apply for the Student category)

Practitioner, a special award for hearing care professionals who are currently in practice

Pediatric Practitioner, a special award for hearing care professionals in school or clinical settings

Winning nominations will be announced in October. First place category winners will receive a $1,000 award and a $1,000 donation by Oticon to a not-for-profit cause of their choice. Second place winners will receive $500 and third place winners will receive $250. All nominees, regardless of whether they are selected as category winners, will receive a Certificate of Recognition.

People may nominate themselves or other individuals with a hearing loss for the Oticon Focus on People Awards. Nominators complete a simple form that asks for a brief description of the nominee's accomplishments and contributions that distinguish them as role models for all-but especially for others who struggle to overcome the stigma of hearing loss.

To complete an application, visit www.oticonusa.com, Professionals section and click on the Oticon Focus on People Awards link. The deadline for nominations is Sept. 8.

The neurology division of Schwarzer, based in Munich, Germany, develops and markets computer-based electrodiagnostic systems and disposable supplies used by medical practitioners to aid in the detection, diagnosis and monitoring of neurologic disorders.

The acquisition was completed through an asset purchase under which Natus acquired the assets of the neurology division of Schwarzer including all shares in MMT Muenchner Medizintechnik GmbH, a subsidiary of Schwarzer GmbH engaged in the distribution of neurology products. Schwarzer Neurology expects revenue of approximately EUR 4.8 million for its fiscal year ended June 30, 2008.
