Hello Dr Ross,
I read with interest your articles regarding your experiences before and after your CI surgery. I have talked, via email, with many CI users; however, you are the only one who seems to have experienced hearing loss similar to my own experiences. I am 54 and started wearing hearing aids at age 19, so you see, I’ve progressively lost my hearing over time, as I think you have too. I’m at the crossroads where my hearing aids are ‘maxed’ out…I hear but cannot understand speech very well. My wife repeats just about everything she says and if any other noise in the house, I just as well forget it. I’m considering the CI but honestly, I’m scared! We can communicate at home alone and from what I’ve read, I’m confused just what to expect from the CI. Since I do have some hearing (with hearing aid), I’m afraid the CI might not help and since there’s no going back to hearing aids, it’s just almost too scary. I know everyone is different, but do you think I should wait until I get nearly nothing from my hearing aid or is now the time to get the CI? As you said in your article, you have to have realistic expectations, but like you, I want something fantastic to happen. I want to be able to enjoy the theater and movies. Since it’s been a while since you had your CI done, where are you now with your hearing? Are you able to hear in noise/wind/etc and understand speech? Is it better than when you wore hearing aids? If I can just sit and have conversation with my wife w/out all the repeating, it’d be well worth it to me…can I expect that much? I’m about to contact a surgeon for a consultation. If you can offer any advice as to what to ask or what to look for in a surgeon or anything I need to look out for, I’d truly appreciate it.
Thank you for your time.

Dr. Ross - I'm retired from NYSp and was in the army artilliary. At 73 I have severe hearing loss and do my best to correct it by any means necessary. I have an excellent audiologist Sue Weinstein who is with ENT & Allergy Assoc. in White Plains NY.-- I'm atr a point now where I'm trying to find a "Hand held'directional microphone that would be asttached to a body worn pick up thaT EITHER WOULD GO TO HEADPHONES OR TRANSMIT via t-set up to my hearing aids. Any help on my finding this mic would be much appreciated RICH
