Yes, audiologists have a similar education level as other doctors. If you begin a private practice, you may not make as much as you would like to, due to several factors. But if you do not flood your hands and expect everything to fall in your laps, in few years, you will make some money. I have been in practice since I graduated in 2003, and I made close to $75000 in my second year! It may not be like this every year, but if I work hard and stick by, it will pay off. So try it, why not!

Hi,

I am in the same boat as Jeff. Can anyone send me an answer to the same questions? It seems that audiologist have to now (since Au.D is the new requirement) spend more time in academics and still receive less pay than other professions (for instance, Optometry school is 4 years and the median salary is around the 90's). Could someone also comment on the rigor of audiology school? Coming from a business background, I have worked long, intense days and am wondering if an Au.D program would require the same amount of work, if not more.

Any advice, insights, or opinions are greatly appreciated.

To audiologists,

I am a student here at BYU and I am just doing an internship at a health and wellness center at Utah Valley State College. I am trying to decide on what I want to pursue at the graduate level and where. I have been looking into audiology and I would love to get some feedback on why you chose what you did, would you do something else, are you leading a financially stable life; i.e., what is the income of an audiologist, what are some the best schools with the audiology program, what kind of things can I get involved in while doins my graduate work. Any additional information would be awesome.

Kathleen,
To answer your question...look at your state. Jersey is incredibly short handed when it comes to audiologists, high demand with a small pool to choose from. And its tough to live in NJ. High taxes on homes and tons of traffic. I used to work in NJ (can you tell). My opinion on salary is stated in my previous response to Debra, but ballpark, I think an offer of $80,000+ to an audiologist with that much experience...probably $90,000+...but you have to feel them out...can you justify the salary...what will the audiologist bring to the table? I hope this was helpful to you.

Debra,
In my opinion, its not how long the audiologist is working, but what they bring to the table. A while ago on TV there was a special on a sports star named Johnnie Unitas. He was the #1 quarterback of the 1960's and revolutionized his position. After his first year in the NFL he requested a higher salary. The owner of the football team said "thats more than a veteran of 7 years is being paid". Ill never forget Johnnie Unitas' response...Is it the quantity or quality that counts? This is true for everything. If you have an audiologist who will make you "x" amount of dollars, has excellent bedside manner with patients and conducts tests accurately and in a timely fashion then its a good idea to pay them 1/2 of "x". If there is no reference "x" then the average salary of someone with 3-5 years experience is between $60-$80,000...or much more if you consider the "x". The survey is quite low when you consider the cost of living in the northeast...and middletown...my inlaws have a home there.

What is the Average audiologist salary in the Northeast who holds a Doctorate degree in the field, in addition to having 17-18 years of experience?

Hi, Just wondering if the salary survey also looked at years of experience and how that was broken down. I am curious what the going salary is for an audiologist with 3-5yrs experience... with MA or AuD. tks, Deb

Hi, I would like to get a feel for what would be a reasonable salary for someone with 3 -5yrs experience. Has MA, AuD or is working toward AuD. Experience being brought to the position should include ENG and HA dispensing. Tks, Debbie

Just wanting to see the competiveness of salaries.
